Senate Homeland Security Committee to Vote on Nominee to be Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security
Tuesday, March 14, 2017
The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs has scheduled a business meeting for this week to vote on the nomination of Elaine Duke to be Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. The meeting is scheduled for 10:00 am EDT on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. The Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security manages the Department’s day-to-day operations and oversees the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Immigration Statistics, and Office of Policy components of the Department. |
Confirmation Hearing Held. The Committee held a hearing last week on the Duke nomination. The nominee, herself, was the lone witness at the hearing, which was held on Wednesday March 8th.
During the course of the hearing, Duke came under questioning from Senator Harris on DHS’s immigration enforcement priorities, the wisdom of dramatically increasing the number of ICE and CBP officers, and ethical issues involving ICE and CBP officers. However, she offered little clarity on her views on those issues. With regard to immigration enforcement priorities, though, Ms. Duke indicated that an ICE memo on prioritization may be forthcoming soon.
Outlook. At the time of this writing, there as no known opposition in either the Committee or in the full Senate to Duke's nomination.
